Expert calls on Tinubu to integrate technology for enhanced national security

In a bid to address the prevailing security challenges in the country, an expert in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Ibrahim Olasege, has urged President Bola Tinubu to integrate technology-based measures into the national security framework.

Emphasising the pivotal role of modern technology in fortifying the nation’s security apparatus, Olasege believes that incorporating ICT solutions will not only enhance the overall security situation but also contribute to the reduction of criminal activities, hence, the call for strategic integration to bolster the country’s defense against emerging threats.

Olasege, who is a principal computer and network engineer at Dots ICT Institute of Technology, Abeokuta, Ogun State, noted that ICT-based measures should be integrated into all aspects of the security framework, including intelligence gathering, investigation, and prosecution.

Olasege in a statement released on Sunday explained that ICT  can be used to track and monitor activities, as well as to improve communication and collaboration between security agencies.

Expressing concern over the profound security challenges confronting the country, Olasege highlights the imperative of leveraging ICT-based measures as a crucial step in addressing and countering insecurity.

He underscores the potential of ICT in establishing early warning systems, empowering security agencies to anticipate and prevent criminal activities, hence, he advocates for a proactive approach to security, emphasizing the role of technology in fostering a more responsive and vigilant defense against evolving threats.

He said: “By integrating ICT-based strategies like surveillance and Monitoring, data analytics and intelligence, emergency response systems, community policing platforms, border security solutions, collaboration and information sharing, digital forensics, into the overall security framework, Nigeria can enhance its ability to prevent, respond to, and mitigate security challenges, contributing to a safer and more secure environment for its citizens.

“Collaboration among government agencies, private sectors, and international partners is crucial for the successful implementation of these initiatives. Nigeria can also leverage ICT to foster economic development in various ways, including E-Government initiative; Implement e-government solutions to streamline public services, reduce bureaucracy, and enhance transparency.”

Acknowledging the commendable efforts of the Nigerian government in advancing ICT initiatives, he underscores the existence of lingering issues that demand attention and resolution.

“Secondly, ICT in agriculture, implementing ICT solutions in the agricultural sector to improve farming practices, will increase productivity and enhance supply chain management. And this can be done with the use of mobile apps for farmers, precision agriculture technologies, and market information systems.

“The government needs to develop smart city initiatives that leverage ICT to improve urban planning, transportation, energy management, and overall city efficiency. Smart infrastructure can enhance the quality of life for residents and attract investment, digital education and skills developments, E-commerce and digital marketing, healthcare technology, cyber security measures to mention few.

“By strategically implementing these initiatives, Nigeria can harness the transformative power of ICT to drive economic development, create employment opportunities, and improve the overall well-being of its citizens,” he stated.

In addressing the challenges of unemployment and internet fraud, he advocates for a comprehensive strategy that encompasses various aspects such as education, skill development, entrepreneurship, and the establishment of support networks to cultivate the interest of Nigerian youths in ICT.

“ICT education and training, industry collaboration, ICT hubs and innovation centres, incentives for ICT companies, recognition and awards and lastly support for ICT start-ups, by applying these measures, the government may foster an atmosphere that stimulates and supports young people to develop a strong interest in ICT. This, in turn, can help to reduce unemployment by developing a trained and competitive workforce for the digital economy.

“It is crucial to remember that combating online fraud necessitates a combination of preventative, investigative, and punitive tactics. Continuous effort, adaptation to new threats, and stakeholder participation are required for a sustained and effective response to cybercrime in Nigeria,” he said.
