Our Saskatoon downtown core had a stake driven through its heart (already on life support) when Saskatchewan Polytechnic announced its Saskatoon campus will be relocated to the Innovation Place on the University of Saskatchewan campus along Preston Avenue

This means eventually closing its location on 33rd Avenue and Idylwyld and all 10 satellite downtown campus locations. These locations are essential major economic location drivers for the Saskatoon west side and our downtown city core.

The 65-year-old Saskatoon campus has staff of 2,700 and a student body of 6,000. The province has committed $200 million to build the new facility and the cost could rise to $500 million.

That’s more money than spent on the Remai Modern and the preliminary budgets of the library and arena combined.

Planners say the new location is best when cycling, transit and traffic is considered. However, There’s no mention of the economic loss to our downtown or the west side.

A healthy downtown is absolutely essential in supporting and attracting present and future resource industry personnel and offices. I implore everyone in Saskatoon to reach out to their local politicians and ask why our downtown/west side was compromised.

We all know that downtown lands were and are available. Arena lands were purchased and the downtown city yards are a possibility.

If we don’t act now, we will inherit an even more repressed and regressive core than Saskatoon has ever seen. For the benefit of future Saskatoon generations, act now!
