BMW’s color-changing vehicle tech promises more personalization, greater efficiency

BMW turned heads in 2022 when it debuted a color-changing technology on its BMW iX Flow concept. But it was limited to black, white and shades of gray. It took just a year to add color. The automaker’s i Vision Dee concept features a full-spectrum version of the tech, which enables it to display 32 different colors in various patterns on the vehicle’s exterior. But it’s not just meant for eye-popping visuals. BMW sees the technology, still in prototype phase, helping to boost efficiency by changing the vehicle’s exterior to something brighter and more reflective on a hot, sunny day to reduce air conditioning use or to allow emergency vehicles to become more noticeable on roadways when needed.
