To mark summertime – on a more global level, one assumes, considering India has its monsoon now – New Delhi producer BeatCrush aka Siddharth Sethi released his dance song “Ice Cream,” a playful tech house-informed tune that leads with the hook, “Do you want to lick my ice cream?”
Sethi – who has been a DJ for about a decade now, after he attended EDM star Avicii’s India show in 2013 – maintains that the song also has the visual identity of the frozen dessert too. “It’s the idea of freshness and something chill that keeps you going,” he says.
The vocal sample that enlivens “Ice Cream” along with its upbeat, possibly swing-informed melodies was one that the DJ-producer stumbled upon during a late-night session of Internet digging. “The moment I heard this, I knew I had to make this sample come to life. I could envision how it would sound in a club and the connection it will bring with the audience. The whole idea of the song was to produce something quirky yet groove so that it makes you laugh and makes you dance at the same time,” Sethi adds.
BeatCrush previously released songs like “Puff” in 2020 but more recently found a new audience after crafting a lo-fi mix of hip-hop/pop artist KING’s hit song “Maan Meri Jaan.” While there are plenty of mashups on BeatCrush’s Instagram – as part of his series Unexpected Mixes – it was his version of “Maan Meri Jaan” that led to being onboarded for an official remix. It also goes to show that the lo-fi trend isn’t going to die down any time soon. As a producer, Sethi welcomes it with open arms. He adds, “It is enhancing the peace and calm people want to get by listening to music and it will definitely stay for a long time. I would love to go back and produce more lo-fi music as well.”
Until we hear more on that front, there are more BeatCrush songs coming up in 2023, one that allows Sethi to push more sounds globally. “I want to push the Indian sound of authentic folk and electronic music out there in international markets to give people a taste of our music,” he says. As a producer, he’s also working on pop songs and plotting collaborations with singer-songwriters. “Let’s see what makes it out of the vault,” Sethi says.
