New unit at Justice Dept to fight tech crimes

Deputy Secretary for Justice Horace Cheung said the government will set up a new unit as soon as possible in the fight against tech crimes and online scams.

Writing in his blog, Cheung said the unit, under the Prosecutions Division of the Department of Justice, will specialise in online scams, cyberattacks and online terrorism, among other offences.

It will also provide legal guidelines on how to use evidence collected digitally.

Cheung said there’d been a threefold increase in the number of tech crimes in the past six years, reaching 22,797 cases in 2022.

The deputy justice secretary also urged people to be aware of scams involving “deepfakes”, saying the Department of Justice will assist the police to tackle these crimes.
