Bengaluru: Absconding ex-friend held for techie’s murder

BENGALURU: The mystery shrouding the death of 23-year-old techie

Akanksha

Bidyasar has taken an interesting turn with city police arresting her former friend on charges of murder. Akanksha’s body was recovered from her Kodihalli flat on June 5.

Accused

Gurijala Arpith

, who was on the run for over a month, told police that he killed Akanksha as she had been distancing herself from him.

Arpith, 25, worked as a sales manager in Hyderabad and is from Delhi. On the night of June 5,

Jeevanbhimanagar

police registered a murder case against unidentified persons, after recovering Akanksha’s body. A techie with a private company, Akanksha lived with a friend. The incident came to light when her friend returned home from work. Probe revealed that the killer had strangled and then smothered Akanksha to death.

In 2022, accused Arpith and Akanksha worked with the same company and both lived in Bengaluru, said police. After he was promoted, Arpith moved to Hyderabad.

Cops on month-long hunt

Arpith told police that he had fought with Akanksha on June 5 evening and then murdered her. “Arpith was upset as Akanksha spurned him and he killed her for the same reason,” an investigating officer said adding: “The accused had come to the city that day to meet her.”

During their nearly one month hunt for

Arpith

, cops visited Delhi, Hyderabad and other places.

“After killing Akanksha, Arpith headed to City railway station and purchased a ticket to Delhi. He boarded the train next day. For some reason, he alighted in Bhopal and using different modes of transport, including bus, reached Assam. There, he lived in a hotel and other places before travelling to Vijayawada. There too he lived in hotels and other places,” an investigating officer said.

“After killing Akanksha, Arpith had left behind his mobile phone, ID card and other materials in her house. Initially, he used the cash that he had drawn from an

ATM

in Bengaluru. Thereafter, we froze his cards. Using internet cafes, he had been contacting his old colleagues and friends for financial help. Last week, we traced him to Vijayawada. But by the time we reached Vijayawada, he had left. Finally, he was arrested in Bengaluru. He was in the city to meet a friend for money,” he said.
