The University of Regina was not a part of the mission because it had already been in India this year.

Representatives from the U of R “did not participate in the March mission as President Jeff Keshen and UR International staff had recently visited India from February 18 to 24, 2023,” the university said in a statement.

Two formal MOUs came from the mission for the U of R.

According to government, these trade missions and agreements can “lead to increased global opportunities for Saskatchewan students, help make Saskatchewan the destination of choice for international students and ensure the province is developing a skilled workforce.”

At the U of R, India is hugely important for attracting a base of International students.

“Prior to the pandemic India had become the U of R’s largest international student cohort on campus with close to 1,600 students attending the U of R from that country,” said a U of R spokesperson.

With concerns about the affects of upcoming cuts looming over the university last semester, a positive note is the increase of international students currently enrolled at the U of R. According to the university, the Winter 2023 term saw a 17 per cent year-over-year increase “in the number of international students attending the university and the highest number of new international students ever registered at the university.”

The province highlighted how this kind of agreement between schools and institutions the world over can to better collaboration with focus specifically on “food and energy security.”

University of Saskatchewan VP of Research Baljit Singh said the MOUs will help the province “reach new heights” while opening new avenues for research and international collaboration.

“The India mission in early March was aligned with the University of Saskatchewan’s goals of being the university the world needs. We are grateful to collaborate and share our positive research impacts with our international partners, particularly our work surrounding food security, water and critical minerals,” said Singh.

The University of Regina has done missions to India, Kenya, Senegal, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Mauritius, Colombia, Brazil, Jamaica, Pakistan, Turkey and Laos recently to bolster international recruitment.

“Currently, a delegation led by the Provost Dr. David Gregory is on another mission to China,” said the U of R.

A Bangladesh recruitment mission is set to take place in early June.

One hiccup in attracting international students right now are delays at the passport office which will be further delayed by the national job action taken by Public Service Alliance of Canada workers.
