It has been a year of drastic change in the tech sector, with Elon Musk taking over at Twitter, while an economic downturn sparked major shake-ups and staff cuts across the industry.

Elon Musk ‘sinks’ Twitter
Billionaire Musk has had a disruptive tenure at Twitter since taking over the social media company – after spending a cool $44 billion on the deal.
From firing staff to changing policies, bringing Trump back and banning journalists (and later reinstating their accounts, Musk has captured the attention of netizens around the world.

Meta saga
Meanwhile, Meta was fined a staggering €265 million (approximately R4.7 billion) after a violation of privacy rules resulted in a data breach affecting more than 533 million Facebook users.
The fine was imposed by Ireland‘s Data Protection Commission (DPC) and issued by Helen Dixon on 28 November 2022, after a 19-month investigation.
Dixon is responsible for inquiries into alleged breaches by Big Tech groups of the EU’s general data protection regulation (GDPR).
2022 Africa Year in Review
Meta also released its 2022 Africa Year in Review. Enitan Denloye, Country Director SSA, said Mark Zuckerberg’s company was motivated to grow communities.
“We remain invested in Africa and the various communities we support here in the region”, Denloye said.
“Our work continues to be rooted in giving people the power to build community, whilst bringing the world closer together”.

LastPass breach
Meanwhile, LastPass warned customers of a recent data breach.
The password protection company said an “unauthorised party” gained access to a third-party cloud-based storage service back in August.
The breach was only made known to the public at the end of November, causing an outcry from users whose information had been leaked.
The storage service is used for archived backups of LastPass’ production data and unfortunately also contained a copy of backup customer vault data.
