Drawing on years of professional experience in government service within the information technology field, Mr. Smith serves as the Deputy Chief Information Officer for the 5th Medical Group, Defense Health Agency. Previously, he availed himself as a Lead Systems Analyst/Engineer for the Bureau of Land Management’s National Operations Center, United States Department of the Interior. During the early stages of his career, he served as a Department of the Army civilian as a Customer Support Lead, Lead Network and Systems Administrator, and Healthcare Systems Administrator. In addition, Mr. Smith served as a United States Air Force Active Duty Military Videographer between 1997 and 2006.
An expert in his field, Mr. Smith holds a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology and a Master of Public Administration, both earned through Capella University. Driven to expand upon his knowledge, he has also earned numerous industry information technology and service management certifications, a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification through the Project Management Institute, and earned a Certified Professional through the Society for Human Resource Management.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Mr. Smith aligns himself with the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) International, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA). Though his career has been filled with standout moments, he is most proud to have exerted a positive influence on the field of healthcare information technology by leveraging a balance of empathy, technical capability, and a desire to maximize utility for the beneficiary population he serves. In accounting for his success, he credits, foremost, his family’s love and support, his ability to take on new challenges, and a steadfast commitment to public service.
Within the coming years, Mr. Smith intends to continue serving the public on behalf of the Defense Health Agency and eventually leverage his talents to continue serving elsewhere within the agency.
