Virginia Tech didn’t leave Old Dominion with a win and it appears it left without some of the team’s belongings was well.
The Virginia Tech athletic department issued a statement Sunday confirming “there were items missing” from the football team’s locker room following the Hokies’ stunning 20-17 loss to Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va., on Friday.
“The University is working with law enforcement and Old Dominion University on the matter, and will have no further comment,” Virginia Tech said in a statement, per ESPN.
ODU police chief Garrett Shelton told Zach Staton of WKTR in Virginia that his department was made aware 15 minutes after the game ended that items were taken and less than $8,000 worth of property was stolen.
ODU said in a separate statement it was aware of the “theft of personal property of a few Virginia Tech student-athletes” on Friday.
“ODU athletics sincerely apologizes to Virginia Tech, the Virginia Tech athletic administration and the young men who had items stolen,” the school said. “The ODU Police Department is working diligently to resolve this incident”
The loss itself was one of the most embarrassing in school history, new head coach Brent Perry’s debut. Adding further insult to injury, the contest was delayed at halftime after members of the Virginia Tech coaching staff got stuck in an elevator at the stadium
