Ed, 31, was forced to improvise as he was hit with unexpected sound issues.

The star, whose hot track Brace It, with Ishawna, is out today, said: “It’s the worst thing that could happen,”  but thanked fans for coming to see him even though his mentor ‘Elton John, Glastonbury and Diana Ross were playing.’

He added that he was ‘truly honoured,’ fans chose to come and see him.

A reveller told The Sun: “Ed was such a hero. You could see he was disappointed his mic and ear pack stopped working, but still carried on playing his guitar like a true showman.

As soon as it was resolved Ed was determined to start his show all over again as he played A-Team and Tides from his new album.”

It was an emotional night for Ed, who told fans his lifelong dream had come true of performing at one of the world’s most iconic music venues.

The Bad Habits singer also revealed he had been given the ‘Freedom of the city of London’, which he said was incredible as he was playing his ultimate venue in London.

The ‘Freedom of the city of London’ is a prestigious honour dating back from ancient times, allowing the recipient the privilege to march into the city “with drums beating, colours flying, and bayonets fixed”.

Ed was awarded the Freedom of the City of London at a ceremony which took place in the Lord Mayor of London’s official residence.

As well as his success and achievements in the music world, today’s award also acknowledged Ed’s work as charitable patron with the London Irish Centre.

Ed said at the ceremony: “I think everybody knows how much I love London, and how much it’s been a part of my musical journey, so to receive the Freedom of the City today is something truly special.

“Doing so on the same day that we return to Wembley Stadium is also a beautiful thing.

“Thank you to everyone involved, and to the great City of London.”
