When Banyana Banyana launched their way to the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, some thought the South African Football Association (SAFA) was finally on the right path to getting its house in order and forging a way ahead to greatness for the national teams. 

They followed this up with the announcement of a new technical director, Walter Steenbok. The position had been vacant for nearly three years after they had parted ways with Neil Tovey.

Ten months later, Romaney Pinnock shattered the glass ceiling by becoming the first-ever head of women’s football under the SAFA banner, just days before Banyana set off for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
