Chennai, 5th March 2022: Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science (HITS) celebrated its 12th annual Convocation on 5th March 2022, Saturday at 11 A.M. The occasion was graced by the presence of the Chief Guest Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, Co-Founder of Infosys, and Guests of Honour, Her Excellency Dr Grace Akello, Uganda Ambassador to India and, Mr. Priyadarshan, Renowned Indian Filmmaker.

The convocation was presided over by the Chief Guest along with other dignitaries, namely: Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, HITS; Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro Chancellor HITS; Dr S. N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor, HITS; Dr. R.W. Alexander Jesudasan, Pro Vice Chancellor, HITS; Dr Aby Sam, Director, HITS; Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, HITS; and Members of the Board of Management, HITS.

The convocation commenced with the delivery of the welcome address and Annual Report by Dr. S. N. Sridhara, followed by an address by Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese congratulating the students on their graduation and wishing them the best for their future endeavours She later conferred Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, with Doctor of Science Honoris Causa; and the Guests of Honour, Her Excellency, Dr. Grace Akello, and Mr. Priyadarshan with Doctor of Letters.

Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, in his Convocation address, congratulated all the graduates and encouraged them to take pride in their achievements. He highlighted that the importance of the right use of technology makes a long-term impact on society. He also encouraged everyone that they should give a helping hand to each other as the world has been enduring tough times for the past 2 years due to the pandemic and the ongoing war in Europe. In his keynote, he highlighted 3 important messages for the graduates. 1. Find a Wave to Ride on – he emphasized being aware of the current trends and developments to bring a wave of change in the coming years. 2. India is the Best Place to be – India as a developing nation witnessed massive growth over the period of 4 decades, and will become the largest economy in the next 3 decades. 3. Build Character, Courage, and Capabilities – Moving from the safe confines of the university to the big world, it is essential to build our character by inculcating virtues and values, having the courage and not giving up no matter how things get tough, and keep improving our capabilities to become the best at what we do.

Her Excellency, Dr Grace Akello in her address highlighted women’s empowerment not only in India and also around the world. Her Excellency emphasized the need for love and empathy to build a better society. She also acknowledged the brilliance of human intelligence which is capable of creating wonders and urged that such intelligence should be utilized to bring about prosperity around the world. Highlighting the strong relations that India and Uganda have had over 100 years, she thanked India for her constant support during the times when Uganda needed the most. She concluded her address by congratulating all the graduates and Indian women for their achievements and also professed that every girl child in India should get access to holistic and quality education.

Indian Filmmaker, Mr. Priyadarshan in his address recalled his struggles in his early days. Like any human being, he too was at the crossroads when it came to deciding about his future career. He expressed that once he was sure about what we wanted to do; he put all his focus and energy towards it and became the man for who he is today. He urged every graduate to be confident of their choice and give it all. He wished the graduates all the success and take pride to be a part of this esteemed institution.


During the convocation, a total of 2214 graduands comprising UG, PG, PhD, and Diploma were awarded degrees. 70 Rank Holders were honoured with Prizes for their meritorious performance in Academics. The Convocation was live-streamed in Hindustan’s YouTube Channel and was conducted in both offline & online modes so as to ensure adherence to Social Distancing norms during the pandemic.

Post Convocation, our esteemed guests and dignitaries were involved in planting saplings, and inaugurated the following labs on campus.


Chief Guest, Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan inaugurated the WK Kellogg Food Analysis Laboratory which aims to provide practical and theoretical training on the conversion of raw agricultural produce into processed, packaged, shelf-stable food products and intermediate raw materials; and also helps in the establishment, maintenance and assurance of food quality.


Her Excellency Dr. Grace Akello inaugurated the Texas Instruments Innovation Centre (TIIC), formed in association with Edgate Technologies, so as to bridge the gap between industry experts and academia through TI engagement programme that provides hands-on experience in technologies related to Ultra-Low Power Applications, Embedded System, IoT, Robotics Labs with Brain Wave Technology, and Wireless Sensor Monitoring.

Dr. Peter Koenig, Professor & Head, Institute for Automotive Technology, Trier University of Applied Sciences, Germany inaugurated OKINAWA – HITS Skill Next Centre aiming to make students competent in the EV market. As the automobile industry is facing shortage of talented and skilled engineers needed for the transition to electric vehicles, this centre was set up to fill that gap and gain an edge through industry ready curriculum design.
