Police search Polytechnic University campus after suspected explosives report: student press

Police searched the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on Wednesday after they were notified of suspected explosives on campus, according to the university’s student press.

The press committee of PolyU’s student union said on its Facebook page on Wednesday that the body’s interim executive committee was informed by police on Tuesday that campus security had found suspected explosives in the Shaw Amenities Building — where the union is based.

It added the executive committee did not know what the suspected explosives were.

The student press said that at around 2:40pm on Wednesday, five police officers searched the VA127 room — where the union’s council keeps its ballot boxes — while accompanied by the executive committee’s vice chairman.

The officers also searched a lecture hall and obtained statements from the chairman of the election committee of the union’s council, as well as two members of the executive committee, it added.

It said the police left at around 3:50pm.

“A search warrant was not required because the school had invited the police to the campus to enforce the law,” said the student press in a Facebook post.

“A member of the interim executive committee also pointed out that the rooms managed by the student union are equipped with electronic locks. Only students who have obtained permission can enter. Security guards do not have this authority.”

A PolyU spokeswoman said it will not comment on the incident as it has been referred to the police for follow-up.

A police spokesman said the force will not comment on individual reports. “Any action taken by the police is according to the actual situation and in accordance with the law,” he added.
